Two main passenger airports
Istanbul is served by Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side. Airport choice can materially change hotel transfer time.[5][7]
Official hotel classes
Türkiye's Ministry of Culture and Tourism classifies hotels from 1 to 5 stars under the national tourism-facility framework. Ministry certification can be checked in the official facility search.[2][3][4]
Accommodation tax in 2026
Türkiye's statutory accommodation-tax rate is normally 2%, but Presidential Decision No. 11263 temporarily sets it at 1% through 31 December 2026. Check whether the booking total already includes it.[8]

IST rail connection
Metro İstanbul lists the M11 Gayrettepe–Istanbul Airport–Halkalı connection, with transfer at Gayrettepe to the M2 line.[7]
SAW rail connection
Sabiha Gökçen Airport is directly served by the M4 metro toward Kadıköy, with connections to Marmaray and other city transport.[6]
Choose the district around the trip you are actually taking
Istanbul is geographically large and split between Europe and Asia. GoTürkiye recommends choosing the neighbourhood style first rather than assuming one central district suits every trip.
Transport links are strong, but crossing the city repeatedly can consume a large part of a short stay. Airport, sightseeing priorities, nightlife and business appointments should all influence the hotel area.[1]
Sultanahmet / Historic Peninsula: strongest for first-time sightseeing around the major historic monuments.
Beyoğlu / Taksim / Galata: useful for İstiklal, nightlife, dining and broad public-transport connections.
Karaköy: convenient for waterfront access, Galata and links across the Golden Horn.
Beşiktaş / Bosphorus corridor: useful for Bosphorus access, ferries and upscale city stays.
Kadıköy / Moda: strong for the Asian side, local dining and ferry access to the European side.
Airport-oriented stay: for a one-night connection or very early departure, transfer time to IST or SAW may matter more than being near the historic centre.
Use the official class and the guest score as different signals
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism defines hotel classes from 1 to 5 stars and classifies tourism-certified establishments under national criteria. The Ministry also publishes a facility-search service for certified properties.
A booking platform's review score is not the official star class. VIAZUNO should keep both visible when both are available.[2][3][4]
Verify the exact property in the Ministry search when official certification matters.
Use recent guest reviews for experience signals such as noise, cleanliness or service consistency.
Confirm amenities from the selected property and room, rather than inferring them from stars alone.
Accommodation tax: a time-sensitive 2026 rule
The Turkish Revenue Administration states that the legal accommodation-tax rate is 2%, while Presidential Decision No. 11263 reduced the rate to 1% from 1 May 2026 through 31 December 2026.
Because this is explicitly time-limited, VIAZUNO must treat it as expiring information. For stays after 31 December 2026, the current official rate must be checked again rather than carrying the 1% figure forward.[8]
Check whether the provider total already includes accommodation tax.
Do not add the percentage again if the booking provider states that it is included.
For stays spanning a future rule change, rely on the property's/provider's final tax treatment.
Match the hotel area to the correct airport
For Istanbul Airport (IST), Metro İstanbul shows the M11 airport line connecting into the urban rail network at Gayrettepe, including an interchange with M2. For Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), the airport's official site confirms direct M4 metro service toward Kadıköy.
Do not compare hotel locations using only straight-line distance. Istanbul's two-airport geography, the Bosphorus, traffic and rail transfers can make a geographically closer hotel slower in practice.[7][5][6]
IST + European-side hotel: check M11 plus onward metro or a direct road transfer.
SAW + Asian-side hotel: M4 can be especially useful for Kadıköy-side stays.
SAW to European side: plan the additional cross-city connection and luggage handling.
Very early/late flights: verify current rail operating hours before relying on public transport.
Compare the final payable stay, not only the room rate
The useful comparison is the full amount for the same dates, occupancy, room type and cancellation conditions. A lower nightly number can stop being cheaper after tax, breakfast, payment conditions or non-refundable restrictions are considered.
